FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is VPL™?
VPL™ is an exciting new breakthrough in effective hair removal and skin rejuvenation technology.
VPL™ has been clinically proven to effectively treat virtually all hair and skin types. The wide range of settings available ensures you see superb results.
The Variable Pulses of Light from the Ultra VPL™ uses light energy to treat and remove unwanted hair and skin imperfections safely and easily, and with none of the discomfort of invasive and/or surgical treatments.
What can Ultra VPL™ Treat?
Ultra VPL™ has been proven to effectively treat :
- UNWANTED HAIR FROM ALL PARTS OF THE FACE & BODY
- SUN,LIVER, AGE SPOTS,HYPERPIGMENTATION
Conditions which usually appear in later years. These are all caused by an excess amount of melanin, the pigment which determines our hair and skin colour.
- THREAD VEINS, SPIDER VEINS, CHERRY SPOTS
Conditions where small veins and blemishes become visible on the skins surface.
- WRINKLES & FINE LINES
Collagen is the substance in our bodies that keeps our skin looking youthful and smooth. As we age, our bodies naturally produce less and less collagen, resulting in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- ACNE SCARRING
People who suffer from acne produce too much sebum, an oil naturally produced by the body, which clogs up pores and causes infection. This can result in scarring.
How does it work?
Ultra VPL™ emits light across a range of wavelengths, allowing a greater range of more gentle treatments to be performed on virtually all hair and skin types.
Hair removal with Ultra VPL™ is safe, easy and effective. The light energy from Ultra VPL™ is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which heats up to a temperature that inhibits hair regeneration
Different structures within the skin react with the light, so that the damage caused by aging and the sun is repaired. Ultra VPL™ treats age spots, freckles and pigmented lesions effectively.
Ultra VPL™ leaves skin looking and feeling smooth, silky and radiant.
How effective is the treatment?
Ultra VPL™ treatments are very effective, achieving outstanding results time after time.
Clinical trials have proved that the Ultra VPL™ produces consistent results on virtually all skin types, for a wide variety of skin imperfections and hair removal treatments

Are There Any Side-Effects?
Due to the personalised treatment settings determined by your therapist during consultation, you should not experience any side-effects. A slight reddening of the skin can occur immediately after your treatment, this is an indication of an effective treatment and will fade very quickly.
How Many Treatments are Required?
In most cases noticeable results are achieved after just three treatments, however your therapist will advise you on the best course of treatments for you during your consultation. The number of treatments you will need will be determined by the thickness and colour of your hair, the area to be treated and the hair growth cycle. All hair growth cycles are slightly different and some women, at a mature stage in their life, will sometimes find that some small hairs will appear gradually over time due to increased hormonal activity.
What Should I Do After Treatment?
In the days following treatment hairs will still be in place, however, they will slowly be released from the follicle. There is no need to pull or pluck the hairs, they will fall out naturally over a period of one to three weeks after receiving your treatment.
Can This System Be Used With Other Therapies?
Yes, clients often have other treatments around the same time as having an Energist VPL™ treatment. Always advise your therapist during your consultation about any other treatments you have recently received or are planning to have.
What results can I expect?
• One VPL treatment will increase your skins collagen production by a huge 42%!
• A reduction or removal of freckles, pigmentation and age spots,
• A reduction of unwanted redness,
• treatment of fine lines and wrinkles,
• Thread veins on the face are successfully treated.
What is the treatment like?
Before beginning your first VPL treatment, your PVMEDSPA therapist will go through a thorough consultation with you,
involving information about your skin, health status and tanning history to ensure that you will receive the most
effective treatment possible. There is minimal discomfort while the light waves are used on your skin.
Some people liken it to a small rubber band flicking against your skin.
Is there downtime?
With no down time, you can have your treatments performed at any time of day and return to work with no visible signs of treatment. Recovery is generally immediate or overnight, depending on the size and location of the treatment. The area may be a little red for a few hours & pigment spots and sundamage may increase in colour temporarily if a pigmentation treatment has been performed.
In most cases results can be seen after just three to five treatments, however, your therapist will advise you on a suitable course of treatments during your consultation. The number of treatments you will need will depend on your age, your skin condition, the severity of your condition and your lifestyle. Best results are achieved with a course of treatments. Your therapist will advise you as to whether top up treatments over a longer period of time may be required.
Can I combine VPL with other skin care treatments?
Yes. Sometimes the best results are obtained by combining VPL treatments with skin peels, microdermabrasion, and
vitamin infusions.
What is Rosacea?
It may begin as a tendency to flush or blush easily and progress to persistent redness in the center of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose. It also may involve the ears, chest and back.
Some people experience facial redness, inflammation, burning or warm tingly sensations. As the disease progresses, small blood vessels and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area; however, unlike acne, there are no blackheads. Some patients suffer from inflamed pustules or spots.
Rosacea is primarily a disorder of the facial blood vessels that undergo changes and become hyper responsive to internal and external triggers such as sun exposure, heat, rich foods, caffeine and alcohol.
How can Rosacea be treated?
Traditional treatments for rosacea include topical and oral anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medications. However, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) has been clinically proven as being successful in reducing the side-effects of Rosacea.
Intense Pulsed Light therapy uses multiple wavelengths of light to treat dilated blood vessels in the face. The vascular structures which are responsible for causing Rosacea respond to the precise energy level and wavelength of light that is emitted via the laser. The small spot of laser light travels through the skin and is absorbed by the blood within these vessels. The resulting heat coagulates or clots the blood and destroys the function of the vessel. Over time, the vessel is absorbed by the body and disappears from sight. This leads to reduction of the redness and flushing appearance of facial skin.
How long do treatments take?
VPL therapy takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes and is typically performed at six week intervals. Clients may require several initial treatments and then return annually for treatment of new blood vessels. Our team of highly trained professionals will create a skin rejuvenation program for you.
What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are small, thin superficial capillaries that lie close to the surface of the skin. They can look like tree branches or a spider web with their short jagged lines. They are connected to the larger venous system though they are not an essential part of it as they do not actually carry blood to the heart. Spider veins can be found on both the legs and the face and can cover both very small and very large areas of skin.
What Causes Spider Veins?
No one knows exactly the cause of spider veins, but several factors including heredity are believed to cause a person to be more likely to develop them. Oral contraceptives, hormone changes and therapy, sun exposure and the natural aging process also may contribute to their development. Spider veins may also be related to rosacea, and other trauma to the skin or may be heredity.
How do treatments work?
Photorejuvenation technologies deliver precise dosages of energy to targeted veins with minimal risk to surrounding healthy skin. The energy is absorbed by the targeted vein(s) causing thermal coagulation of the blood in the vessel.
What do treatments feel like?
Most experience little if any discomfort at the treatment site. The sensation and the degree of discomfort varies with each person. When pulses of light are delivered some patients feel a mild pinching or stinging sensation. Similar to the light snap of a rubber band. No local anaesthesia or pain medication is typically required, however some patients may prefer to use a topical anaesthetic when sensitive areas are treated.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically, 3 to 6 treatments offer the best results; Depending on severity, clients usually notice significant improvement within one to two treatments. Potential for maximum long-term resolutions increases after another 1 2 sessions.
Will the veins return after Laser treatment?
Over time it is possible for new veins to appear, but these too can be erased. Optimal results can be maintained only if you apply sunscreen and avoid exposure to the sun.
How can I prevent spider veins?
You can do a number of things to help prevent veins and to relieve discomfort from those you have:
•Protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen to limit spider veins on the face
•Exercise regularly to maintain or improve leg strength, circulation and vein strength. Focus on exercises that work your
legs, such as walking or running.
•Avoid placing too much pressure on your legs by controlling your weight
•Avoid standing for long periods of time. If you must stand for long periods, shift you weight from one leg to the other
every few minutes. If you must sit for long periods, stand up, move around, or take a short walk every 30 minutes.
What are the possible treatment options for treating acne?
At Promenade Village Medspa we offer light based therapy treatments using VPL, Salicylic Peels and Microdermabrasion for the treatment of acne.
What will the skin look like immediately post a light therapy treatment?
Post treatment, the skin will be pink and slightly swollen. Some feel an intense heat for 24 to 48 hours post treatment. The skin will be photo-sensitive post treatment for 48 hours which is why sun exposure should be avoided during this time.
How does microdermabrasion treat acne?
Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment which remove the keratinized skin cells from the surface layers of the skin. It is great for those with blemishes by forcing skin regeneration. If the skin is able to shed or turnover as it should, break-outs may be avoided by preventing the build-up of bacteria underneath the skin.
What can I expect post a microdermabrasion treatment?
Post treatment you may notice slight pinkness and flaking in certain areas. There is no downtime with this treatment which is why it is often referred to as a lunch time procedure.
What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels are exfoliation treatments which are also used to combat acne. We offer a wide range of peels. Glycolic and salicylic acid peels are most effective for those who experience blemishes. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid which means it has the ability to break apart oils which is beneficial for acne sufferers.
What are the post care instructions?
Post treatment, avoid the use of a hot tube or sauna and strenuous physical exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Do not expose the treatment area to the sun or tanning bed 2 weeks post treatment. Use sun block post treatment.
What are the treatment intervals and how many treatments are required?
Chemical peels or microdermabrasion may be 2 to 4 weeks apart. Light therapy is usually performed once a week. When treating acne, multiple treatments are required for best results. The exact number of treatments will vary depending on your current skin condition, however, most clients undergo a series of 6 sessions or greater.
TRIPOLLAR BODY CONTOURING
What are the advantages of focused RF energy?
TriPollar treatments use three or more electrodes, with the RF energy focused and centered between the three electrodes. This controls and limits the delivery of energy to the treatment area, for excellent efficacy results and immediate visible results from the 1st treatment. The focused energy also enables the use of relatively low power for tissue heating, resulting in a safe, pain-free, very pleasant treatment experience.
How high does skin temperature reach during a TriPollar treatment?
The objective of the procedure is to reach a skin temperature of between 40° and 42° C and maintain it for the indicated exposure time. The skin temperature is monitored throughout the procedure with the non-contact infrared thermometer.
What kind of results can I expect to deliver with the TriPollar treatments?
Clinical trials have demonstrated average reduced tummy circumference of 4.5 cm ± 2.7; average reduced thigh circumference of 2.4 cm ±2.0; average reduced buttocks circumference of 3.1 cm ±1.7;and average reduced arm circumference of 2.1 ± 0.7 cm.
What are the most common side effects of TriPollar treatments?
There is a possibility of redness and slight swelling appearing after the TriPollar treatment session. Typically, these symptoms are transient and will disappear within two hours. In rare cases, slight redness and swelling could persist for between 1 and 2 days. In these cases aloe can be applied.
How does the body dispose of the fat after TriPollar treatments?
The TriPollar treatment selectively heats the fat cells in the deep and superficial adipose layers simultaneously. Heating the fat cells increases their natural metabolism, resulting in increased secretion of fatty acids into the surrounding extra-cellular space. The heating also increases the blood circulation in the area, accelerating metabolism that physically helps the blood and lymphatic system dispose of the fatty acids naturally.
Is there an enhanced heat sensation over bony areas?
There is a possibility of enhanced heat sensation near bony areas. This is because skin is thinner adjacent to bones. However this is tolerated well by patients.
Is there a need for cooling during the TriPollar treatment?
There is no need to allow for cooling with TriPollar treatments. Pollogen has developed an electronic control mechanism that rotates between the three electrodes to prevent overheating of any one electrode. This makes it a safer treatment protocol.
Why is glycerin used during TriPollar treatments?
Glycerin was found to be the most suitable material due to its high resistance to RF. It allows the RF to penetrate to the deep layers while protecting the epidermal layer from becoming overheated or harmed. Glycerin is also widely used in the cosmetics industry as a safe and beneficial component. Glycerin also helps the applicator glide comfortably over the skin and keeps it feeling cool.
WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Chemical peels involve the application of a chemical solution to remove the dead and damaged outer layers of skin. Chemical peels improve and smooth skin texture and help to reveal younger, clearer, more radiant skin. Chemical peels, also known as "Lunchtime Peels" are traditionally performed on the face, hands, and neck to treat fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and skin discoloration. Chemical peels are also effective in treating mild scarring and acne.
WHAT TYPE OF PEEL IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Your skin care professional will be trained on each of the PCA Professional™ Products. This training will allow them to not only choose a treatment designed for your skin type, but customize a treatment, addressing your personal skin care needs.
HOW MUCH DISCOMFORT SHOULD BE EXPECTED WHEN HAVING A PEEL?
The level of discomfort experienced depends on the treatment. Most PCA Professional™ chemical peels are gentle and create little or no burning or stinging sensation in the skin. Dramatic wrinkling, sun damage or acne scars may require a deeper peel, which may cause moderate stinging for a few minutes. More dramatic results can be expected from a deeper peel, however deep peels are not necessary for most skin types and conditions. PCAs philosophy of taking a low-dose approach means our superficial chemical peels create minimal discomfort and produce beautiful and immediate results for most patients.
SHOULD PEOPLE WHO ARE FREQUENTLY IN THE SUN RECEIVE PEELS?
Yes, but only if they are compliant with using sunscreen protection every day. Sunbathing should be avoided directly following a treatment and while the skin is peeling. If you are getting peels to lighten the skin, it is imperative to use the appropriate pHaze 13 Pigment Gel® Dyschromia Controller (with HQ or HQ Free) followed by pHaze 6+ Hydrator Plus SPF 25 or pHaze 7 Protecting Hydrator SPF 25 and avoid unnecessary sun exposure to reduce any chance of further hyperpigmentation.
WILL A CHEMICAL PEEL MAKE THIN SKIN EVEN THINNER?
Dry skin is partially the result of dead cell buildup, which actually hinders natural exfoliation as well as the absorption and penetration of vitamins and nutrients. Having a PCA Professional™ chemical peel will remove surface buildup, hydrate the skin and give it a plumper, thicker appearance. The use of topical vitamin C and peptide products in a treatment, as well as in your daily care regimen will help build collagen in the skin, thus making it stronger and more durable.
IS THERE ANY DOWNTOWN?
The in-office treatments require little or no recovery time. Although there is typically no downtime; after a treatment, depending on the customization of the procedure, you may experience redness the day of the treatment and minor peeling in the days following the procedure.
What is microdermabrasion?
Skin microdermabrasion is a gentle treatment that promotes more youthful, fresh-looking skin. The outer layer of skin is removed with the help of aluminium oxide or bicarbonade crystals. This promotes renewal of skin surface cells while stimulating production of collagen and elastin within deeper layers of skin.
After your first treatment your skin will have a fresh pink glow and a smoother texture.
Depending on the areas treated, you will notice an improvement in your skins texture and appearance. Skin imperfections such as fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars and age spots will be reduced and less obvious. Your skin will feel smoother and softer, and look younger.
Improvements will continue throughout your treatment program.
Is it right for me?
Microdermabrasion is an ideal treatment for men and women, with all skin types both younger and older.
How many treatments are required?
A series ofTreatments may be needed.. Treatments usually take 20 to 30 minutes depending on treatment goals. Many clients continue on with follow-up sessions to maintain their desired look.
Are there any aftercare recommendations?
Microdermabrasion has No DOWNTIME! Most client can return immediately to their daily routine.
